Utility giant FirstEnergy has received $11 billion from five different customer bailouts since 1999. Now they're asking lawmakers to approve a bailout tax of $300 million per year, to be paid by every utility customer in Ohio, no matter what service territory you live in.
Most of this money is to bailout the Perry and Davis-Besse nuclear plants, which have struggled to compete with natural gas and renewable energy sources. The bailout bill before lawmakers also defunds Ohio's very successful renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, which have saved customers $5.1 billion since 2009.
I support Ohio Citizen Action's campaign to promote renewable energy use and fight for fair utility rates by stopping HB 6, the nuclear bailout tax.
